Spring Break Security: How to Keep Your Phone, Identity, and Valuables Safe While Traveling

By Marc Shook, Owner — Shook Insurance Agency | Wichita, KS

Spring Break is almost here, and whether you’re headed to a beach in Florida, a theme park in Orlando, or somewhere a little closer to home, one thing is universal: vacation mode has a way of making all of us lower our guard. And that’s exactly when things go wrong.

I’ve been in insurance long enough to know that the calls I dread most are the ones that start with, “I was on vacation and…” Stolen phones. Identity theft. Lost wallets. Luggage has gone missing. These aren’t worst-case-scenario horror stories; they happen to real people, every single spring break season.

At Shook Insurance, our mission has always been to help Wichita families stay protected. Not just at home, but wherever life takes them. So before you pack your bags, let’s talk about some smart, simple steps to protect yourself and your family this spring.

Your Phone Is More Valuable Than You Think

Think about everything that lives on your smartphone. Banking apps. Travel confirmations. Two-factor authentication codes. Your entire photo library. Years of contacts. Access to your email.

Now imagine losing all of that in a crowded airport or on a busy beach boardwalk. Your phone isn’t just a device, it’s your digital life. And in high-traffic travel spots, it’s one of the most common targets for theft.

Here’s the part that most people don’t think about until it’s too late: the real damage from a stolen phone isn’t replacing the device. It’s the identity theft, the drained bank accounts, and the months of cleanup that follow. That’s what you need to protect against.

Pre-Trip Prep: Do These Before You Leave the House

A little preparation before you leave can save you a massive headache later. Here’s what I tell my own family to do before any trip:

  • Back up your phone to the cloud (iCloud, Google Photos, etc.) so your photos and data are safe even if your device isn’t.
  • Enable “Find My iPhone” or “Find My Device” so that you can locate, lock, or remotely wipe your phone if it goes missing.
  • Set up a strong PIN or biometric. A swipe pattern isn’t enough. Use Face ID, fingerprint, or at a minimum a 6-digit PIN.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your email, banking apps, and social media before you leave. It’s your best defense if someone gets your password.
  • Review your insurance coverage. Many homeowners and renters policies extend personal property coverage to belongings when you’re away from home, but coverage limits and deductibles vary. Give us a call before you head out, and we’ll tell you exactly what you have.

Your pre-vacatino checklist should include prepping your phone for vacation and travel

While You’re Traveling: Habits That Make a Real Difference

Once you’re on the road (or in the air), these habits can go a long way toward keeping you safe:

  • Keep your phone on your person or locked up. Hotel rooms get broken into. Don’t leave devices on the nightstand when you head to the Use the in-room safe or bring a small portable lock box.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi for anything sensitive. Airport and hotel Wi-Fi networks are hunting grounds for hackers. Never check your bank account or make purchases on a public Use your phone’s cellular data instead, or invest in a VPN app before you leave.
  • Be careful with real-time social media posts. Posting “Live from Cancun!” is a great way to let potential burglars know your home is Save the vacation album for when you’re back.
  • Travel light. Leave your Social Security card at home. Carry only the credit cards you need, and consider an RFID-blocking wallet to prevent wireless card skimming in crowded places.
  • Take photos of your valuables before you leave. If you’re bringing expensive camera gear, jewelry, or electronics, photograph them at home with serial numbers visible. This makes filing an insurance claim significantly easier if something goes missing.

What If Something Does Happen? Act Fast.

Even the most prepared traveler can end up in a tough spot. If your device is lost or stolen:

  1. File a police report immediately. You’ll need this for any insurance.
  2. Remotely lock or wipe your device using Find My iPhone or Find My Device.
  3. Change your passwords for email, banking, and social media accounts from a secure device as quickly as possible.
  4. Contact your bank and credit card companies to flag potential fraud activity.
  5. Call your insurance. If your belongings were stolen and you have homeowners or renters coverage, you may be able to file a claim for the loss. We’ll walk you through it.

After the Trip: A Quick Post-Vacation Checklist

Once you’re back home, take a few minutes to close the loop:

  • Review your bank and credit card statements for any suspicious charges.
  • Scroll through your vacation photos before posting and make sure none accidentally include visible flight numbers, hotel room numbers, passport information, or other sensitive details.
  • Check in with your insurance agent if you acquired any new valuables on the trip (jewelry, electronics, artwork), you may want to add them to your policy.

One More Thing Before You Go: Let’s Review Your Coverage

Here’s a question I get a lot: “Does my insurance cover stuff that gets stolen on vacation?”

The honest answer is: it depends. Some homeowners and renters policies cover personal property away from home, but there are often sub-limits for electronics, jewelry, and other high-value items. There may also be a deductible that’s higher than the value of what was stolen.

That’s exactly why a quick policy review before you travel is worth doing. It takes 15 minutes, and it can save you from a very unpleasant surprise on the back end.

Have a great Spring Break, Wichita. Travel smart, stay safe, and, as always, we’ve got you covered.
